Karen Antonelli: Sky Fish ve/oe

Antonelli's newest collagraphs embrace the unpredictability of printmaking. Created from cardboard plates and transferred textures, each print records both deliberate decisions and the physical behavior of the materials. Antonelli collagraph plates are built from mat board, cutting into the surface and layering additional materials to create a range of textures. During printing, those textures both hold ink and emboss the damp paper, allowing the physical construction of the plate to become part of the image itself. In Tower, she combines several printmaking processes. The architectural form is printed from a linocut using a light "kiss" impression that transfers ink without embossing the paper. She then runs the print through the press again over an uninked collagraph plate, using pressure alone to emboss the cloud into the paper. After the print dries, graphite and metallic gold pencil complete the composition.
