Carolyn Wenning
Carolyn Wenning's artwork includes drawings, paintings, collages, and assemblages. Improvisation, gesture, and intuitive mark-making are important to her. Layering elements such as paint, ink, collaged material, and found objects, Wenning explores the space between suggestion and conception. As the viewer navigates her artwork, themes of duality, power and submission, passion, and the tension of relationships, both physical and psychological are revealed. Peculiar liaisons between mark and shape lead the viewer on an evocative quest. Fleshy, sensual, and vibrant color is often found touching dark interior shades of sepia and raw umber. Although Wenning finds inspiration in the curves and connections of the body, the artwork quickly departs from the figurative and mines the power and energy of the psychological.
Wenning lives and works in Pittsburgh PA. Having grown up in the western Pennsylvania aesthetic, parts of this terrain such as expansive views, rivers, forests and the industrial landscape often find their way into her artwork. Wenning exhibits nationally and internationally; most recently at Truro Center for the Arts in Truro MA, The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council in Pittsburgh, and at The Obras Residency in Estremoz Portugal. Her artwork has been included in exhibitions at The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, The Andy Warhol Museum, and The Mattress Factory and is held in private and corporate collections. Her academic training includes an MFA in painting and print media from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University.
