Andrew Ooi: Community Housing 2

Andrew Ooi’s "Community Housing" series plays with the idea of architecture—breaking it down, layering it up, and turning it into something that feels both familiar and unexpected. Using acrylic, plaster, and spray paint on yupo paper, he builds surfaces that blur the line between painting and relief. His artwork carries the structured feel of Constructivist design but also embraces the raw, hands-on quality of Arte Povera. The way he applies plaster, marking it with ridges and grooves, adds a sense of movement, almost like the artwork is breathing. Bright pops of pink, purple, and green give the paintings an energy that feels fresh and modern, even hinting at digital aesthetics. The fragmented shapes bring to mind shifting cityscapes, where ideas of home or shelter are constantly evolving.
