Downtown Renown: Pittsburgh Sports Greats

Limited Edition Digital Reproduction on Paper

18" X 12" each

2020

In collaboration with The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP), Gavin Benjamin created portraits paying homage to fourteen of Pittsburgh’s legendary sports figures. Downtown Renown: Pittsburgh Sports Greats features;

Arnold PalmerBill MazeroskiCharles “Chuck” CooperDan McCoyFranco HarrisHonus WagnerJoe GreeneJohn WoodruffJosh GibsonMario LemieuxRoberto ClementeSuzie McConnell-SerioSwin CashSidney Crosby

Benjamin developed these portraits by collaging his own analog photography with appropriated images, paint, and varnish. The result is a non-traditional, but a highly vivid representation of Pittsburgh's Sports Greats. Commissioned under the PDP’s “REFORGE” initiative that invites the community to safely revisit and reengage with Downtown through unique events and programs, it’s a powerful reminder of the vibrancy that public art can bring to the city, especially one as sports-minded as Pittsburgh.
